Good roller blading news for rollerblading lovers

March 31st, 2008

Adults and children alike need a hobby. While others engage themselves in football or starting a band, there are those which are more interested in roller blading. Unfortunately, just as there are many people who go roller blading, there aren’t many places to roller blade.
Wanted: a good rollerblading place
A place that isn’t fit to go rollerblading could probably lead to danger as rollerbladers come in contact with forces outside their own, such as cars perhaps. Having no place to adequately practice rollerblading is a woe.
However, in Alabama, there exists a skating rink that is owned privately and is open particularly to roller bladders. There are now plans being worked out to build a park specifically for skating and where children who do rollerblade – as well as adults – can have all the fun that they want, eventually keeping the kids off the streets.
Believe it or not, many kids have gotten themselves in a whole lot of trouble by skateboarding through the town’s streets due wholly in fact to the absence of an adequate and appropriate place to rollerblade. Kids are left with no choice but to roller blade in such places.
There are even kids that prefer to wait until night comes in order to rollerblade peacefully in the absence of too many cars. However, such a decision makes them more prone to danger.
Rollerblading benefits
The fact of the matter is that, besides the usual exercise, running, brisk walking, jogging that one does in order to lose weight, another activity one could do to shed all those unwanted pounds is rollerblade.
According to physiologist Josh Crowell from Gold’s Gym, much of the increasing waistlines people have are due to the decrease in physical activity. He has also confirmed that to lose weight, you also need to be active.
Though going to the gym could help, it could also burn a large hole in your wallet. One advice in order to stay active is to be motivated to move.
Usually, people find a routine exercise program boring. The key is in variation. One way is by trying something new. Go rollerblading with someone, specifically with your significant other.
All in all, this is a sweet and welcome addition and variation to what could be your normal activity regimen such as walking or jogging.
Rollerblading can be fun.. Any activity is a fun activity to do if you share it with someone. Make sure though that you rollerblade in places that are safe.

How to Choose Your First Ping Pong Paddle

March 30th, 2008

After learning the basics of ping pong, you now want to learn how to improve your game. You have to consider the fact that the game of ping pong will not only rely on your quick reflexes, excellent hand eye coordination, speed, and quick thinking, but it will also rely on the ping pong paddle.
If you want to improve your ping pong skills, your basic or ready made paddle that you can buy on the market isn’t enough. You have to purchase a new paddle which is better in quality so that you will be able to enhance the power when you hit the ball, increase control and accuracy, as well as put more spins on the ball.
The first step when buying a paddle is by buying a blade with no rubbers attached to the blade. There are quite a lot of blades available on the market today. For your first serious ping pong paddle, you may want to start with an all around blade that is available from ping pong blade manufacturers, such as Stiga, Butterfly, Double Happiness, and Donic.
Since you are still developing your skills as a ping pong player, you don’t need to try hard when choosing a ping pong blade regarding the weight, head size, balance, speed and other factors that professional ping pong players look for. An all around blade will do just fine.
When choosing a blade, you should go for one with a handle type that best suits your grip type. If you use a pen hold, then you may want to go for a blade with a handle designed for pen hold grips and the same goes for the shake hands grip. Try to go for the blade that has handles that feels good to you. There are quite a lot of handle types available but as a person who is buying his or her first paddle, just settle for one that is comfortable to handle.
The rubber is also an essential part. You will need to attach this to the blade. When choosing a rubber, it is highly recommended that you go for smooth rubbers that you will place on both sides of the paddle. Try to stay away from rubbers with pimples as these are specialized and will limit certain strokes and spins that you can do.
Lastly, you will want to buy a good cover to store your ping pong paddle in. With it, you will be able to keep it safe from getting damaged by dirt, liquid spills, and sunlight. These elements can weaken the rubber and can affect your games.
These are some of the things that you need to remember when buying your first ping pong paddle. By following these tips, you can be sure that you will be able to enhance your skills more and also improve your performance when playing ping pong.

Golf Club 101

March 30th, 2008

Should one decide to play golf, the essential thing that a person needs is a set of golf clubs. Most people who are not sure whether to invest more in the game prefer to borrow a set provided by the club or buy a used one. A person can acquire a second hand set from a golf specialty store or buy it from a professional golfer who may want to sell the used set to buy a new one.
When that person feels that one is ready to get serious with the sport, the individual may now decide to buy a brand new one. Here are some tips one should know when learning how to play golf and choosing a set of clubs:
1. There are many brands of golf clubs available. Before buying one, it is best to feel the grip of each so one can choose the right set that the person will be comfortable with while playing in the green.
2. Shafts come in different lengths which are determined by the height of the person. If one is unsure of which is the correct one for the individual, it is best to ask the assistance of the salesperson.
3. A little knowledge of the various clubs will help a person in choosing one even if these are usually sold in sets. A typical set of irons that a person can buy are numbered from 3 to 9 and includes a pitching wedge.
4. Another thing a person needs to play golf is a putter. Just like choosing the right set, the person should feel the grip and how comfortable it is from the brands available in the specialty store before buying it.
5. Errant shots are some things that can’t be helped, especially in the sport of golf. This is the reason why the person should be familiar with the various club designs since some clubs have made restrictions on this.
Bladed clubs are the most recommended for golfers since it gives better precision in every shot that takes skilled hands to accomplish.
6. To maintain the golf clubs, it is best to use a wire brush or a small towel to keep these in good condition.
7. A person needs golf balls to putt into the hole. If one is just getting into the game, it is advisable to buy a cheap set of balls first rather than an expensive one since some shots might fall into the water or in the forest that will just get lost which is just like throwing money into the air.

What you Need to Know about Skiing in the Olympics

March 29th, 2008

Skiing is one of the most awaited events in the winter Olympics. There are three major skiing events in the Olympics – ski jumping, alpine skiing and freestyle skiing. Each skiing event have their own histories in the Olympics.
Ski Jumping
Ski jumping was first introduced in the Winter Olympics in 1924, first as a large-hill event, then as a normal-hill event in 1964. This skiing variation was developed in Norway and was brought to America by the turn of the 20th century.
With Olympic ski jumping, an athletes makes two jump attempts whose landings are caught on video for accurate measuring. Points are garnered based on the jump lengths with longer jumps gaining more points. Five judges rate an athlete’s jumping style on a 0-20 scale, dropping the highest and lowest scores. The skier or the team that garners the largest total distance and style points is awarded the much coveted gold medal.
Most ski jumping medals are won by Norway, Finland and then Austria. Only one American, Anders Haugen, ever won the gold in 1924.
Alpine Skiing
Alpine skiing was first introduced in the Winter Olympics at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Games in 1936. The event featured one downhill and then two slalom courses. The giant slalom made its debut at the Oslo Games in 1952, while the super giant slalom event was introduced in 1988 at the Calgary Games.
This event is frequently won by Austria and other Western European countries that are situated at the foot of the Alps.
Freestyle Skiing
Freestyle skiing made its way into the Winter Olympics at the Calgary Games in 1988 but only for demonstration. It became an official event at the Albertville Games in 1992. Two disciplines are played – moguls and aerials.
Aerials are known to be the most astounding disciplines of freestyle skiing. Athletes choose a spot where they begin and they ski down the mountain to a concaved jump that throws them up in the air, where they perform various somersaults and twists before landing with both skis on the ground. They are rated according to form, air and landing.
The moguls competition on the other hand involves skiers that race down the mountain individually, going through big bumps of up to 4 feet. There are two jumps through the course and athletes try to impress the judges with creative jumps. They are rated according to their turns, air and speed.
Skiing is indeed exciting not only as a pastime but as a sporting event as well.

Tips for Buying the Perfect Pair of Rollerblades

March 29th, 2008

Your skating style
Decide how long you plan to use your rollerblades and what type of rollerblading activities you will engage in. Assess your ability, interest, present skill level and the level you plan to reach later on. Rollerblades or inline skates come in models designed for specific purposes such as recreational skating, fitness and sports, which can include cross-training, rollerhockey and speed skating. Depending on your preferred usage, your choice of rollerblades should meet the different demands of your skating style.
For example, aggressive inline skates will be built differently from those used for recreational activities and have different features compared to racing skates. A beginner skater will do best with most multi-purpose or recreational rollerblades, which should be enough for initial training.
The wheels
Rollerblades have 3 or 4 wheels and some even have 5. The reason why there’s a fifth wheel is simple. The wheelbase of these skates is longer and offers more stability when you skate at higher speeds. This also makes the rollerblades more difficult to maneuver.
For wheel size, most rollerblades come with at least 70mm-sized wheels and some go as big as 80mm in diameter. The shorter the diameter, the slower and more stable the wheels. Taller wheels are best if you want speed, although you’ll need some skills in maneuvering. If you’re a beginner, go for a shorter wheelbase and smaller wheels.
Wheel hardness is also a consideration when buying rollerblades. The higher the number, the harder the wheel. A 74A or 78A number on your rollerblades means that the wheels are softer and can provide better cushioning against bumps. These work best for outdoor terrain. Harder wheels like 82A or 85A are great for indoor surfaces. Choose the right wheel harness for your intended activity.
Fit
Always try on your rollerblades before buying. Wear socks when you go shopping and always ask to try on at least three pairs of different brands. This should give you enough choices on which pair fits you best. Once you have a pair on, stand up, wiggle your toes and move your ankles to see if your feet are comfortable.
Budget
If you’re a beginner, don’t buy the most expensive pair of rollerblades on the market shelf. But don’t buy the cheapest either. A cheap pair of rollerblades won’t last you long and the quality won’t assure that you’ll learn to skate well. It’s best to go with a good quality pair of skates that will last you a long time, at least as long as your interest in rollerblading continues.

How do you play golf: The Basic Rules

March 29th, 2008

Golf is played by hitting a ball using a club on an area called “teeing ground.” Once the ball is hit, it usually travels fairways across and onto a next prepared area. A hole could be found in this area that is called a “putting green.”
The objective of the game of golf is that one should be able to complete a hole by means of hitting a ball from a teeing ground and place it inside the hole of the putting green in as little strokes as possible. What is commonly referred to as a round of golf usually consists of 18 holes to be played in.
In golf, there are basically two kinds of play to choose from. The winner in one kind of play is determined by the holes that are lost and won, this is referred to as a match play.
The other kind of play is determined by the number of strokes one has taken to complete a round. This is called a stroke play.
When playing golf, there are basically two relevant rules to remember: as you find the course, go play it. As the ball lies, it should also be played as such.
If you find it hard to follow the above rule, at least try your very best to do what is fair. How do you know what is fair? Below are the summarized rules to give you a good idea of how to play a good and just game of golf.
The Intro: Basic golf courtesy
Avoid moving, talking or standing too close to a golfer who is about to make a stroke.
Play with a minimum amount of delay. As soon as the players in the group that you are in have left, it is just as best that you do the same.
Try your best not to play until the group is already out of the way.
As much as possible, try to replace the divots. Also, do not forget to smooth any footprints found in the bunkers.
It is highly inadvisable to drop your clubs on the putting green, so don’t!
The Rules of Playing
Before playing that all important round of golf, the first thing you should do is to read the local rules stated on the score card you are holding. After which do not forget to place an identifying mark on the ball you are going to use. Some golfers use the same type and brand of golf ball, if in case your ball is placed among these bunch, you will have difficulty knowing which is which.
Label which ball is yours is more practical to do.
Make sure that you get to count your clubs before actual play. You should have a maximum of fourteen clubs.
When starting actual play, it is best that you tee off in front of the tee markers.
When you tee off a little bit off or outside this specified area and you are playing a match play, your opponent may have to ask you to repeat the stroke you just did. The good thing when one does this in a match play, you get to incur no penalty.
However, if in a stroke play, you then are given a penalty of two-stroke. You are therefore required to play in the appropriate area.
If while you are playing and your ball happens to lie in a bunker or a water hazard, you should not in any way touch the ground of the bunker or the water before you do your downswing.
The ball must as much as possible be struck fairly and should neither be spooned or pushed.
It is okay for you to mark the ball that you are using. You could lift your ball, clean it and place it on the exact place where it was.
When dropping a ball, it is best that you erectly stand and then hold the ball at the length of your shoulder, and then you may drop it. If by dropping the ball it happens to strike your partner, you or your caddie, the ball must then be dropped again with no penalty.
It is also okay for you to lift your ball if by doing so you are able to assist another player. Or you also may lift any other ball as long as that ball interferes with your playing or interferes another player.

How to Determine if Your Child’s Skiing Instructor is Doing a Good Job

March 28th, 2008

Skiing provides families with great joys in the winter but since your young ones may still not be that adept with the sport, it may be necessary for them to take skiing lessons from a professional instructor. There are many skiing instructors all around and you will want to find a good one to teach your child important skills for skiing. If your child already has a skiing instructor you will also want to figure out if he or she is doing a good job teaching your child.
Here are some things that will help you determine whether or not your child’s skiing instructor is doing the right job:
1. Ask your child if the skiing instructor rode with him or her at least once going up the ski lift. This is a special time when the instructor can talk to your child and be able to evaluate your kid’s personality and disposition, enabling the teacher to know how to go about instruction. This will also ensure that the instructor knows your child personally, and will be able to address your kid’s specific needs.
2. Be sure that the skiing instructor knows your kid’s name before the beginning of the lesson.
3. Ask your child’s instructor for a recap of their skiing lesson to figure out which skills your child was able to learn or improve on during the session.
4. See how your child finds the skiing lessons and if he or she would still want to take another session with the skiing instructor. Just have in mind that your child might want to say no to persuade you to ski with him or her.
5. Find out if you kid enjoyed the lesson with the skiing instructor.
6. Go skiing with your kid after the session and see how well he or she has improved. Your child or the instructor may tell a lot about good progress with the lessons but you can only be sure if you see it yourself.
7. A good sign that the instructor is a dedicated teacher is when he or she asks your child questions about the lesson after the session. A concerned educator will always check on students whether they have understood them or not.
8. Try to have a moment to talk with the skiing instructor at the end of your child’s sessions. Ask the instructor about how your child was doing and ask for details about your child’s performance.
By checking on your child’s skiing instructor’s job, you can make sure that your kid would really enjoy the sport.
