Rollerblading: Why It can be Fun for Kids, Too

June 30th, 2008

Kids will always be kids. They are adventurous, ever curious and forever on the lookout for amusement. Most of them don’t want a couch potato’s life. So if you are a young mom that is looking for a channel for your kid’s energy, then it’s high time to enroll him in his first rollerblading lesson!
Rollerblading might appear to be a risky sport to most parents. Although some moves may prove to be on the edge, still, there are many ways of enjoying this sport while not jeopardizing your child’s safety. There are many safety rules and equipment that would guarantee that your child is out of danger. There may be falls, yes, but accidents can be avoided.
Rollerblading not only teaches about exercise, muscle coordination and mastering technical moves. It also teaches your child some discipline and socialization. With the rigidity of constant practice, your child will learn about time management and delegation of activities. And these will all help your child in his growth and psychological development.
There are many rollerblading training camps that offer classes when schools are out. Most instructors are available during holidays and even weekends. Of course, kids are taught differently when compared to adult students. There is a separate group of instructors who specialize in teaching children the rollerblading sport.
Lessons for kids normally include how to fall properly (to lessen the occurrence of injuries caused by bad falls), getting better balance, confidence while on the skates, turning and stopping with accuracy and even some tricks and moves that would mirror the moves of professional skaters.
There are many websites that offer rollerblade training for kids. You might want to check on the following: Rollerblading.com (look for the kids’ link)—this is inclusive of Kids’ Universe, ActiveKidz, FoxKids.com, Activities for Kids and Weird Stop; and LondonSkaters.com (again, look for articles on kids).
And guess what, for birthday parties, you can now choose to have the rollerblading theme for your little rollerblade enthusiast. This party theme is highly recommended for kids aged 8-12 years old.
To sum it all up, don’t focus too much on the injuries that your kid might incur. Instead, think of all the positive aspects that he will gain once he masters rollerblading. Learn to let go of him and he will be able to reach heights that you could never imagine (whether it be figurative or literal).

How to Select the Right Ping Pong Equipment

June 30th, 2008

A lot of ping pong equipment retailers will show you different kinds of essential equipments that you need in order to properly play ping pong. In fact, they can even let you select the paddle or blade you want and the rubber you want to go with it and assemble it for you.
However, the problem with this is by knowing which rubber or blade to get in order for you to increase your performance when playing ping pong.
The rule in ping pong paddles is that the paddle should have a black rubber on one side and a red one on the other. You also need to remember that the ball should be orange or white and new ITTA rules suggest that the official ball should be 40mm in size.
When choosing a rubber for your blade, you need to know about the amount of spin a specific rubber can generate. You also need to know that different types of rubbers will affect the speed of your paddle. You can try customizing the paddle by having one type of rubber in one side and a different type of rubber on the other. Just remember that it should be red on one side and black on the other side.
The blade can also vary. Try to remember that you need to know about the weight, speed, and the handle shape. For most people, the flared handle is great and a medium weight blade is also preferable as it will give you good speed and good mass. The rule of thumb is, try to find the heaviest paddle possible that will not affect the speed of your swing.
For the handles, the flared handle is by far the most popular. It is used by loopers and all around players. For people who likes looping or driving, then the anatomic or conic handle is your number one choice.
The straight handle is for people who are good at smashing and is favored by ping pong players who have a powerful backhand. If you use Chinese and Japanese grips, then the penhold handle is your choice.
These are the things that you need to remember so you can choose the right ping pong equipment. With this, you will be able to get the right paddle, with the right rubber that can keep your performance at an optimum level. So, just don’t believe the hype of the best paddles available. Go for the one that best suits your performance and the way you play.

Winning at Miniature Golf

June 28th, 2008

Playing mini golf is not just for children. It is a game that can also be played by grownups which may be smaller than the ones in the real course. All the person needs to play is a golf club and a ball.
People who have never played the real game will easily get the hang of it by just watching how others swing and putt the ball into the hole.
Here are some tips when playing:
1. One should read the rules and regulations posted outside before playing the game. There are certain rules there, which are being implemented for the safety of the players and other people who frequent that place.
2. There is a certain dress code when playing this game. It is advisable to wear some lose clothing which will make that person feel relaxed and a cap if the weather is hot.
3. Whenever someone is taking a shot, one should not create any sounds or disrupt the player as a sign of courtesy to that person.
4. Just like in real golf, people take turns when playing in one hole. Should that person do well in a certain hole, that person has the right to tee off again in the next hole.
5. After one has putted, it is best to retrieve the ball away from where the person will putt since this is considered as impolite to the other player.
6. Lastly, play the game honestly.
Playing miniature golf with friends or family is just one of the many forms of relaxation people can do these days. It is a time for bonding and a great escape from the pressures of the city. If that person wants to get serious in this game, one can practice more often and join some miniature golf competitions and even win a prize. Such facilities can be found on the web or by checking the local directory.
Miniature golf facilities are not just for people who are normal but are also for people with disabilities. The law requires such places to make at least half the number of holes accessible to these individuals. Failure to do so will require the owners of the establishment to redesign the layout in compliance with the requirements of such recreational facilities.
This activity is very affordable and it doesn’t really matter if one wins or loses. It is all about having fun which everyone can enjoy even if one is young or old and able or disabled.

Understanding Scoring Rules in Bowling

June 28th, 2008

Score rules are the basic rules in bowling. They determine who won the game or how they got their scores. There are guidelines that need to be followed in scoring a bowling game.
There are frames that are used in scoring the number of pins that were knocked down during the delivery. The frame is shaped in a square with a little square box in the upper right corner of the square. When a strike is scored, no marking or counts are made in the boxes. However, the pins that were knocked down on the first delivery are scored in the box next to the small square. The pins knocked down on the second delivery are listed on the smaller box inside the square.
A strike occurs when all 10 pins are knocked down on the first delivery. The square is then marked with the letter “x” on the upper right corner of the box. The score is then made by counting 10 for the strike and adding it to the number of pins knocked down on the next two deliveries.
Two strikes made consecutively are scored as a “double”. The score for the first strike is then 20 and the number of pins knocked down on the first delivery before the second strike. Strikes that are made on three successive attempts are called a “turkey” and they are scored as triple. The score of the initial strike is 30. The maximum score that a player can get is 300. To do this, he needs to make 12 strikes consecutively.
There is also a spare, which is scored when the pins that were left standing after the first delivery were knocked down on the second delivery. Both deliveries should fall in the same frame. A spare is then marked with a “/” in the smaller square on the upper right corner of the frame. The count for every spare is scored 10 added to the number of pins knocked down after the next delivery.
An open frame occurs when a player was unable to knock down all of the 10 pins after the two deliveries. A split may happen when the head pin was knocked down but there were lower pins that remained standing creating two separate set of pins.
Scoring may be hard to understand especially if the player is a beginner. It would be easier for him to enjoy the game first before understanding the scoring guidelines. After frequent visits to the bowling lanes, he will eventually learn to understand the scoring rules of bowling.

Ping Pong Push: The Advantages and Disadvantages of Pushing Long and Pushing Short

June 28th, 2008

Many people think that pushing in ping pong is a passive strategy that is only used for defensive purposes and used as a last resort when there are no other shots available. However, you need to remember that pushing is also a strategy that can be used to give you the advantage in the game. So, here are some basic instructions that can help you learn about pushing and the difference between pushing long and pushing short.
If you push long, this will enable you to decrease the angles that your opponents can get. What this means is that you will force your opponent to hit the ball further away from the table. With this strategy, you will be able to have time to recover from your mistakes and you will also be able to get ready for his or her next shot.
However, the main disadvantage of pushing long is that you will allow your opponent to have a chance to take a full swing at the ball, meaning that you need to expect a powerful return with a lot of spin on the ball. To do this effectively, aim the ball at around 6 inches from the end line. By doing this, you will lessen the risk of making a mistake.
To make it harder for your opponent to anticipate your pushes, vary the backspin from light to heavy at random intervals. This will make it harder for your opponent to anticipate your pushes.
Pushing short is also advantageous in a lot of ways. One advantage of pushing short is that it will make it hard for your opponent to attack. Try keeping the ball low if you plan on pushing short as this will leave your opponent off balance and will make him or her give you an easy ball that will enable you to start a full swing attack.
The disadvantage of pushing short is that it is harder to do than pushing long. Try practicing it and it will enable you defend your side of the table effectively and it will also enable you to begin a counterattack.
These are the things that you need to know about pushing in ping pong. By knowing how to push, you will be able to provide an effective defense, and you will also be able to prepare for a counterattack.

Basketball Rebound for Short Guys

June 28th, 2008

People often have the misconception that when they aren’t tall, they can’t make rebounds. Well, this may offer some truths behind it but this doesn’t absolutely have to mean that short people don’t have the capacity to rebound under the basket. It only takes 3 skills to do just that, whether you equal Yao Ming’s height or that of Muggsy Bogues with 5′3!
To be a good rebounder you must posses these three things: determination, positioning and aggressiveness. Even with the lack of height you can conquer the inner court. While it may be easier for taller guys to dominate the area under the basket, you can still have the chance to take the opportunity of getting the ball.
You must initially develop the skill of anticipating where the ball will land after a missed shot. This way, you can better position yourself towards the spot and take over the ball. But short players often have the difficulty of doing this since they are overwhelmed by other taller players. And the common mistake among players under the basket, even with those who are adequately gifted with height, is that they tend to watch the ball’s flight after a missed shot.
Determination
You must be mentally prepared and focused on your aim to get the ball, come hell or high water. There are other players on the court but you must set your mind on getting the ball first. If you believe that you can do this then you must be willing to take the risks that accompany the action of going under the board.
There is noting more satisfying than being able to steal the ball from everybody else followed by a scored shot.
Rebounding is considered as one of the most difficult skills to learn in basketball. But with enough skills and determination matched with adequate practice, you can learn to rebound as many times as you decide under the ring.
Positioning
You must always hunt for the ball under the ring. You must remember that once you get the ball in your hand, you must land with your elbows wide- protecting the ball. Make as much space as possible so other players won’t be able to steal it from you.
Aggressiveness
Timid players never succeed in rebounding. Simply because the rebound area is normally the most physically demanding fields in the court. If you are afraid of getting hurt or fouled, you won’t get the ball.

Basketball: How the Game Started

June 28th, 2008

It all started with a child’s game that the inventor, Dr. James Naismith used to play outside his schoolhouse when he was younger. This game was called duck-on-a-rock, it aimed to knock the duck off the rock by tossing another rock against it.
This then gave Dr. Naismith a concept of a game which he introduced to the students of YMCA Training School in 1891. Due to the cold weather, the trainees of the School for Christian Workers needed a game that could be played indoors and one that wouldn’t use much strength. He then conceptualized a ball game that uses two baskets as goals with both teams competing for the most number of shots.
Apart from the game itself, he also outlined the first 13 rules on playing the game which covers the guidelines, distinction of violations and fouls, and the roles of both umpires and referees, including the duration of each game.
Thus, these events led to the actual birth of the game in December 21, 1881 when it was first played after Dr. Luther Gulick, the head of physical education at the YMCA, gave a two-week allowance for his employee to create a new game.
While the game would be developed in the following years, the students of the YMCA Training School loved it initially. It was even said that Dr. Naismith had a difficult time convincing his students to leave the game after each session.
The game went on to be played in the Olympics in Berlin, Germany where the USA Team beat the Canadian team with a score of 19-8. At this time, there were 22 nations that joined the competition. By 1976, Women’s Basketball was introduced into the Olympics.
On August 3, 1949 in New York City, the National Basketball Association was formed. But prior to that were the creations of National Basketball League (NBL) in 1937 and Basketball Association of America (BAA) in 1946. The NBA now serves as the largest group in the history of basketball. There are only two leagues left which retained their names since the formation of NBA, the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics.
The first women’s collegiate basketball was splayed on April 4, 1896 in San Francisco’s Page Street Armory where Cal and Stanford met. Unlike the physical and strenuous game we now see in WNBA, the women basketball teams back in 1896 retained their ladylike approach in the game and rules were even modified to accommodate this natural tendency. Stanford then won with a 2-1 score against Cal team.
These events led to the popularity of basketball in our time.

Can you believe there’s a parasailing tour?

June 27th, 2008

If the idea of launching off a take-off area, taking flight and landing by plunging into the water isn’t exhilarating enough for you, take this. There are parasailing tours and many people sign up for them.
Most of the time, it takes place at beaches. Water babies make the most of their ocean get-away by paying a particular amount for parasailing tours which allow them to have a grand view of the entire shore.
They take off at an area that is on the boat. This also serves as the landing area when they’ve finally decided to land. You don’t have to worry about scratching your face with rough branches when you crash into coconut trees.
Some tours even have professional photographers armed with a camera that zooms in their focal point so that you can document your Kodak moment in the sky.
Collectively, the whole parasailing trip lasts for about an hour. This is the general time needed for the boat to find the spot that is most ideal for the customer to see the view of the beach. The ground crew also assists in setting up the customer/parasailor for his parasailing experience.
Technically, the whole parasailing gig (pertaining to the time when the parasailor is in the sky) lasts for about 6 to 8 minutes. But there are parasailing tours that are considered to be special because the parasailor has the option to have another go after he lands.
They soar high above oceans and nearby towns. Maui is the most popular parasailing spot. There are so many parasailing packages and tours made available for enthusiasts. Imagine flying off an 800 foot long line. You will not only enjoy the waters of Maui but the skies as well.
Get a package with discount rates. Also, book as early as possible. That is the absolute way to go. Steer clear of the parasaling season. In Maui, this is from May to December.
The parasailing tours will be worth the price you pay because of the experience you get from it. It may be quick couple of minutes up in the sky but only a few people could actually say that they did it. Also with the tour, by paying extra you can have a second take at the parasailing experience.
So go to Maui now and book!

Conducting Repairs On The Canoe

June 27th, 2008

No matter how sturdy the manufacturers claim the canoe is, frequent use makes it susceptible to wear and tear. This happens when it is unloaded from the top of the car or when paddling through rocky terrain causing dents and small holes to appear in various places.
The first step when conducting minor repairs is to know the problem. If water seeps in, this means there is a hole somewhere and if proper action isn’t taken, the canoe will sink.
The best way to deal with a leak is to use some duct tape and patch it. If there is none, nature may provide the necessary solution for the problem. You can get a small stick and then use pine pitch, which is a sticky gum from the pine tree that can be applied to the hole.
These two are merely temporarily solutions and the best part is, both are durable and waterproof which gives sufficient time for those in the canoe to head back to shore.
When you get back to shore, it is time to look for a permanent solution. The first thing to do will be to dry the canoe. The nice thing about dents is that since the metal or the plastic was pushed inside; it can be fixed by simply pushing it outward.
But for leaks, the owner should cut a piece of fiberglass cloth that is a few times bigger than the damaged area and then mix this with a resin mixture. When it is ready, it should be applied over the affected area using a wooden strip to avoid creating any bubbles.
If the little patch isn’t even when it dries, you should then use sandpaper to smooth it out. It is best to see the 100-grit paper and then change this gradually with the 220 and then the 400 as the finishing touch.
Some paint should then be used to cover up the repair especially if the canoe is painted in a different color.
Canoes are hard to maintain. This won’t be a problem if it was rented but it is only right to know how to fix it should damaged be sustained during the trip. The customer should then report this to the office so it can be pulled out for awhile and the next group who comes will also be able to use the boat.
