A Primer on Downhill Skiing

August 7th, 2008

Downhill skiing is an extreme recreational activity that is characterized by the sliding motion down slopes of snow-covered hills. This outdoor sport has been gaining much popularity and recognition worldwide as more and more people are becoming interested in it.
Downhill skiing is one extreme sport that is somehow risky. That way, downhill skiing requires people who are interested to make ample and tedious preparations.
As a recreational activity, downhill skiing can be pricey. This is because you need to invest in several expensive tools and apparel before you can do downhill skiing. Among these equipments are the skiing poles, the boots and the skis.
The skis are metal wedges that are attached to the feet of the downhill skier. In downhill skiing, the skis are essential because it facilitates the smooth gliding movement of the skier down the snow slope.
Things to take note when preparing to engage in downhill skiing
It would be helpful if you would first consider several important issues and information before you finally enlist in a downhill skiing class or before you go to a ski resort to do the sport.
The most important considerations would have to involve your physical fitness. Downhill skiing is an extreme and very physical activity, it is important that you possess great agility, flexibility and overall physical endurance.
The best and most expensive tools for downhill skiing would be useless if the downhill skier isn’t physically capable and skilled to perform the highly demanding activity.
The aspiring downhill skier must be physically in good shape before he can get into the sport. Simple exercises taught by gym instructors, especially for the leg and thigh core muscles, can be of great help to achieve that physical agility needed to perform safe and effective downhill skiing activity.
Stance and steering
The first physical condition you must take care of if you aim to get involved in downhill skiing would be your stance. Stance is everything since you can’t do the downhill skiing activity sitting down.
Experts advise downhill skiing beginners to initially adopt a martial arts stance before and during the downhill gliding activity. That is because such stance would help make up for a balanced and relaxed body position, a great start for such a heavy and demanding physical activity.
Steering would be a secondary key to making you do the downhill skiing activity. Though downhill skiing principally involves gliding down slope, inevitable instances will always arise when you have to develop steering abilities when downhill skiing.
Steering is the ability to go to a slightly diversed direction when you are tracking down the normal course of the slope. You must develop steering ability so you can avoid small obstacles and holes along the way.
Edging and footwork
Downhill skiing aficionados would also surely recommend that you develop edging abilities, just like in hockey. Edging is the ability to slowly stop or hop to a stop. Downhill skiing makes use of gravity down the slope and you’re not a machine with brakes, you have to develop edging abilities.
When you learn to get moving, you should logically also learn how to put your moving self to a stop or pause.
Downhill skiing involves much footwork. It is advisable that you learn the proper knee positions, the appropriate bending angles, how to move each foot and other footwork activities as these are essential when performing the sport.
Moving body mass and using the poles
Of course, not to be overlooked is the ability to move body mass between each foot. This is important because there will certainly be areas down the track where you have to balance well and doing so would mean you have to transfer weight from the right foot to the left.
Moving body mass ability is also significant in the steering and edging movements in downhill skiing.
When you know how to move your body mass properly, the last thing you will learn is using the poles.
Poles are important downhill skiing equipment because they serve not just as navigational tools but also as support, speed control and directional tools.
Using the downhill skiing poles is as important as learning all the abovementioned skills because poles are necessities when skiing. You can never ski without poles.
Overall, downhill skiing would surely be a fun activity. But before you get into it, consider the safety and physical issues. Otherwise, you won’t enjoy the extreme sport and might endanger your life as well as the lives of other downhill skiers.

Parasailing Boats

August 7th, 2008

When it comes to seeking thrill and excitement, parasailing is the best solution for that thirst. It provides the best setting to make the heart appreciate just how much fun this experience could be.
Parasailing is a recreational sport that utilizes the parachute and a boat to make the player go airborne.
The person should be attached to a parachute that is in turn harnessed to the parasailing boat. Once the boat moves at a very high speed the player will then be lifted and allowed to sail in the air.
Just imagine how much fun it would be to feel like flying in the air and seeing everything from above. This is freedom that you’ll never experience by merely walking on land.
Parasailing Boats
When doing parasailing over the water, the boat is one essential element to the experience. You can’t ignore the purpose this will serve you to achieve the goal in parasailing.
There are many considerations in choosing the boat that you will use for parasailing. You can’t fall short of the requirements as this will ensure you the safety of the whole activity.
Here are some aspects to check out in your boat when you go out parasailing.
1. Rent a Boat
Not everybody can afford to purchase a boat to support the parasailing endeavor. However, this shouldn’t keep you from enjoying the sport. You can easily find a boat for rent that will let you enjoy parasailing on water.
Most ports will have a number of boat owners who will rent. Just be sure to check out the structures of the boat. It must have the right features to support the parasailing activity. If possible, seek out directly the people who provide parasailing services.
2. Check the Equipment
The boats must also have the proper equipment. At the least, there must be parachute, harnesses, ropes and emergency kits.
Check out also the fuel supply of the boat. You shouldn’t go out if you don’t have sufficient fuel. The boat will be running at a very high speed when you go parasailing. You can’t afford to run out of your energy supply.
3. Hire a Guide
Parasailing by boat will also require you to have an experienced guide to accompany you throughout.
The boat will have to run long distances at a very high speed to let you enjoy parasailing. Thus, the guide can properly dictate the course where you can freely cruise without getting in the way of other people.

Parasailing Types: Know Why They’re All Fun

August 7th, 2008

Parasailing. It is a sport that offers fun combined with exhilaration and breathtaking moments. It isn’t for the weak-hearted because this activity can take you off the ground for as high as 200 feet!
There are three ways to start a parasailing experience:
1. Starting from the shore (also known as the Beach method)—in this type of parasailing, the parasailor is taken from the ground and usually makes a water landing. Among the three types, the beach method is the least recommended even for experienced parasailors. This is because the speed and the altitude of the ride are mainly controlled by the boat (or car, whichever is pulling the parasailor). With the slightest miscalculation, the rider might land in an unsafe area (probably in the water!). Only the highly experienced should choose this type of parasailing as steering instructions are also given to the rider.
2. Starting from the platform towards the sea—on this type, the parasailor also starts from the shore but his landing would be the platform. A ‘newbie’ could use this method even without any knowledge in steering a parasail. Both the boat and the platform are aligned with the wind (but just make sure that the wind is no lower than 5 mph and it shouldn’t be greater than 15 mph).
3. Starting from the platform on a ship (popularly known as the winchboat method)—with this type of parasailing, the parachuter takes off from the platform on a ship where he is hoisted to an open parachute. This parachute is ready to be used and this type of parasailing is the fastest and safest among the three types. After parasailing, a winch will aid the person to land back on the ship’s platform. To make sure of a smooth landing, both the boat speed and the line speed should be synchronized. With this type, the rigid chair could be used to make the parasailor more relaxed during the ride. The partially reclined chair, much like the harness, is also attached to the winch which is hydraulics operated.
There are so many ways to enjoy parasailing. You could enjoy the experience as an individual, as a couple, or as a group (this is best done with your family!). And if you are bent on having this as your latest (or even lifetime) hobby, then you are well on your way to numerous adventures.

Mapping Good Waters of General Patronage

August 7th, 2008

It takes a lot of careful planning and speculations to explore a water vacation. When this is so, you’ll have to be confronted with queries as to the place you’ll reach at a certain point and time. Considering your group, it may compose of some elderly (grand dads and granny’s), the near middle-aged husband and wife, and the kids who are too young to fit into unprecedented choices.
Considering Distance
Extensive paddling in faring a river on long distance is too boring for the kids who are more prone to jumping out their energies rather than being stocked inside the canoe for long period of times. To avoid boredom, map out routes surrounded with plentiful views of nature’s beauty to deviate from the monotony of any situation. Include an itinerary to ferry on crystal clear waters displaying the aquatics side by side the gliding boat. A wholesome atmosphere, sightseeing and a wonderful feeling of the weekend sums up to a successful vacation.
Search the Real Places Accurately
Go Digital. Visit your website. Digital charts are there on the web. The global internet awaits lines of web traffics, hyper at penetrating the whole worldwide network. There are many advertisements of places for canoe cruising over lakes and whitewaters, where, what, and how it is by individual or group choices.
Hotel Reservations or classy restaurants present brochures with detailed travel maps and instructions to reach places easily to save energy and time.
Be attentive to billboards on your way there. Such are direct hands-on ads pointing out accurately as desired by anyone, supplied with slogans and broad pointers of the real object to sell.
Listen to those who actually had real experience, but rely only on people of ample taste or know-how to evaluate the place that may apply to your lifestyle and demand.
Look at Reliable World Class Tourists Parks
The Wakulla Springs State Park in Florida, U.S.A. is a 3,000 acres sprawling line of pristine forest rich in wildlife and natural trails. The Wakulla River running thru aged-growth cypress swamps is real core rainforests water that makes it a generally accepted tourist destination for canoe adventurers all over the U.S. A real photographers’ environment, it is a delight to pick pictures of countless wildlife, like alligators, turtles, and different species of birds eating vegetation in their natural habitat.
Vancouver Islands in Canada offer a lot of opportunities to all types of canoe or kayak paddlers during the spring or winter. Choose on either, to fare the *Cowichan Lake and the *Cowichan River, a great opportune place for sports, recreation, or plain fare around the lakes.
There are a lot more places of acclaim where you could pass time for canoeing. Most importantly, just look for one that provides primary safety, convenience, and comfort rather than the ambience it upholds to those with high lifestyle.

5 Top Tips to Improve Your Skateboarding Techniques

August 6th, 2008

First things first: there is no quick and painless way to become a good skater. Improving your skateboarding techniques requires constant practice and determination to outdo yourself each day. You may fall several times or may even cut or bruise yourself - that is part of the learning process. However, if you want to improve your skating techniques, here are the things you should remember:
Skate with an expert
You don’t need Greg Lutzka to teach you a new trick. Any of your friends is good enough. Hang out with skaters that are better than you and learn from them. Be a good student and learn only the things that can do well for you. Also, read articles about skateboarding tricks to learn proper execution. Do not adapt bad skating habits.
Be Safe
It is useless to practice and master all the tricks in the book in one day and not be able to skate for another day. Skateboard-related accidents happen to beginners and even to experts. Wear protective gear including helmet, elbow caps, knee pads, wrist pads and gloves. Use the right equipment, wear proper shoes, and execute tricks with caution. Do not attempt to be the daredevil. Even Tony Hawk wears protective gear when he skates so why wouldn’t you?
Set a goal
Improving your skateboarding techniques will be easier if you have a set goal for the day. For example: today you will start learning to “ollie” and perfect it the next several weeks; next, learn how to heelflip or backflip; after mastering those tricks, learn how to grind, and so on.
Practice right
Right practice makes perfect so if you want to improve your skateboarding techniques properly, do tricks the right way. If you are not able to master a trick in a day or in a week, do not get frustrated. Be patient. Constant practice will get it done.
Make it Fun
It is important to have a set goal but do not put too much pressure on yourself when learning new and harder tricks. Skateboarding should be fun. If you were not able to learn a trick in one day, that’s okay. No one does. The good thing is that you still have tomorrow to practice. After all, skating is not all about the tricks. It is more of the fun and discipline you experience in the sport.

Engaging in Some Outdoor Fun Like Canoeing in California

August 5th, 2008

Many people love to sstay in California because the weather is just right all throughout the year. It isn’t too hot since the Pacific Ocean is to the west and it’s never very cold because snow never falls.
Here are two places worth visiting for those who want to have some outdoor fun.
The first is Yosemite National Park. There are trails for those who want to go hiking and biking while those who want to relax can enjoy fishing or canoeing at the nearby lake. Given that many people frequent it every year, tourists are encouraged to make reservations ahead of time especially for those who are staying overnight.
Next is San Simeon Creek. If there is no vacancy in Yosemite, it isn’t a bad option as the same activities can also be done here and it is only a few miles walk to the ocean. People can even pitch a tent and camp in the wilderness.
In both places, visitors can rent a canoe or bring the one that was attached to the roof of their car. Proper handling of the boat must be done at all times so there won’t be any additional charges if there are any damages incurred.
Since most trips will make the group stay in the boat for a few hours, it would be a good idea to bring along some food and water. A hat, a pair of sunglasses and some sunscreen should be applied to prevent the skin from getting burned.
It may be awhile before anyone does this again so someone should bring along a camera to take some pictures.
In order to protect the valuables brought on board, they should be placed in waterproof containers or plastic bags. A large canvass can also be used to minimize water splashing into the canoe.
Life jackets are a must even if the water is calm because too much movement may cause the canoe to capsize and it will take a while before everyone is able to get back in the boat.
Most people would rather go to the beach or do something else in the outdoors instead of rowing a canoe. But for once, you should try it because this experience may be enjoyable making it possible to do it again in the future.

A Peek Into Various Forms Of Canoeing

August 5th, 2008

Back in the old days canoeing was invented to meet the basic needs of early people for transportation across rivers, streams, marshes and along other waterways. Back then canoeing was the primary and almost only means for long-distance traveling at one part of history all-throughout the entirety of the Amazon Basin, Polynesia and North America among other places where the exact history of canoeing is still undefined and unrecorded.
As a mode of transportation, canoes have almost been extinct and their place taken over by motorboats, airplanes, trains and roads. And with the increasing number of cars in the world there is almost little need for man powered canoes and kayaks, although they still remain as one of the most popular recreational sports and watercrafts in the world.
This much is true due to the existence of a the canoe-based and kayaking like sports that actually uses canoes and kayaks as the main tool for competition. Some of the most famous forms of kayaking and canoe based sports would be water races with man powered boats. There are many forms of water racing that is based on canoeing. Here are some of them:
1. Sprint. This is probably one of the oldest disciplines of canoeing, sprint is also known as canoe racing and as the name suggests it involves several individuals on canoes that have the same goal, and that is to finish the race the fastest.
It is relatively easy when it comes to the requirements and the needs of the sport but the real need lies on the skill and the hard work that is exerted when paddling the canoe.
2. Slalom. Many people consider this as one of the hardest competitions in canoeing because the slalom competition pits each competitor in a grueling descent to the riverbed. This usually happens in white water rapids.
After the opening bell, all of the competitors flush out of the gates and down the rapids of the white water course. They weave the boats through gates placed along the white water line. The fastest time down the course and through the most number of gates wins.
3. Marathon. This refers to a long distance race done mostly in flat water or in the open sea. Flat-water courses are usually on lakes and in marshes and are relatively easy because of the minimal obstacles that you have to tackle. Open sea courses are more demanding and more dangerous because anything could happen.
Though most marathon canoe races are done during the calmer dispositions of the sea, you can never know what really lies ahead. Open watercourses are also more grueling because of the changing tides. Canoe marathons can be considered the world’s toughest boat race.

The History of Ping Pong: Knowing About This Popular Sport’s Humble Beginnings

August 5th, 2008

As a ping pong enthusiast, you can’t help but wonder about the history of ping pong. Basically, most people think that table tennis or ping pong started out in China. This is a common misconception although China produces some of the best table tennis players in the world.
So, here is a brief history of ping pong or table tennis to accurately know about its humble beginnings.
Our story begins in England in the year 1880. Table tennis at that time was played by Victorians of the era as a recreational activity. During those times, dinner parties were often associated with table tennis games as a form of entertainment to the guests.
During that time, tennis was a very popular sport. However, because people wanted to play tennis but didn’t want to go outside in their formal attire, they invented a small version of tennis, which is now commonly known as table tennis. Often played indoors, this game became widely popular among most people in England.
During this era, the corks from champagne bottles and knotted pieces of strings were used as the balls. The paddles were lids of cigar boxes. As you can see, table tennis in those times was quite primitive. This is due to the fact that there was no existing table tennis sporting goods store.
However, because of the popularity of the game, a lot of people who wanted to start their own business started opening up sporting goods and designed paddles and specially made balls for table tennis. With this, ping pong developed to be a sport rather than a recreational game.
From these humble beginnings, you will see that the sport of ping pong eventually became very popular among many people.
Today, you will see international tournaments and quite a lot of sporting goods store that sells different kinds of ping pong accessories. You will have access to different kinds of paddles with different handles, and there are even shoes that are specifically designed for playing table tennis.
From corks and cigar lids, table tennis became one of the most popular sports in the world.
So, the next time you think about table tennis originating in China, you should try thinking again. Table tennis or ping pong as most people call this sport, originated in the 1880 in England as a humble recreational game to entertain dinner guests.

Canoes: What Makes Them Different?

August 5th, 2008

Generally speaking, canoes are like other boats in that they employ paddles to move the boat forward and backward or to move it around. But the differences may be more pronounced to some kind of paddled boats while others are just because of a mere innovation.
Take kayaks for example. The main difference between a kayak and a canoe is that a kayak is a closed type. But essentially a kayak uses the same double-bladed paddle and employs more or less the same strokes used in canoeing.
However, since the kayak has an enclosed top it allows the boat to recover from a capsized position without taking in that much water. With the help of a little something called a spraydeck, the deck is sealed between the deck and the paddler preventing the water to enter the insides of the kayak.
When we talk of paddled boats, we can’t avoid discussing another very popular kind, the rowboat. The rowboat is very different from the canoe. A rowboat is pushed through the water by means of the boat’s oars. The oar rests in pivots and extends out from the boat. Unlike canoeing where the paddler sits in a way that he sees the direction he is going, a rowboat paddler sits with his back toward the direction of travel.
Another kind of paddled boat is the Adirondack guide boat. This is a kind of rowboat which shows similarities to the design and functionality of a canoe. The only difference is that the paddler sits closer to the hull and uses oars that are attached to the sides of the boat.
But of course you’re familiar with the Dragon boats. There are competitions held using this kind of boat. Basically a dragon boat is paddled in the same way as a large canoe. The rowers sit facing the direction of travel and use a single blade paddle. However, this is where the similarities end. The dragon boat is constructed differently from the canoe.
And finally, we have the so called sit-on-tops another paddled boat which are more similar to a kayak in terms of design and handling than a conventional canoe.
It is well known that canoes tend to be unstable on the water. However, the instability often results from using the boat the wrong way. Thus it is always important to know the basics of handling and propulsion of the canoe before attempting rowing one. Also, always make sure to wear protective gear like floatation devices to assist you during accidents.
