Mapping Good Waters of General Patronage

August 7th, 2008

It takes a lot of careful planning and speculations to explore a water vacation. When this is so, you’ll have to be confronted with queries as to the place you’ll reach at a certain point and time. Considering your group, it may compose of some elderly (grand dads and granny’s), the near middle-aged husband and wife, and the kids who are too young to fit into unprecedented choices.
Considering Distance
Extensive paddling in faring a river on long distance is too boring for the kids who are more prone to jumping out their energies rather than being stocked inside the canoe for long period of times. To avoid boredom, map out routes surrounded with plentiful views of nature’s beauty to deviate from the monotony of any situation. Include an itinerary to ferry on crystal clear waters displaying the aquatics side by side the gliding boat. A wholesome atmosphere, sightseeing and a wonderful feeling of the weekend sums up to a successful vacation.
Search the Real Places Accurately
Go Digital. Visit your website. Digital charts are there on the web. The global internet awaits lines of web traffics, hyper at penetrating the whole worldwide network. There are many advertisements of places for canoe cruising over lakes and whitewaters, where, what, and how it is by individual or group choices.
Hotel Reservations or classy restaurants present brochures with detailed travel maps and instructions to reach places easily to save energy and time.
Be attentive to billboards on your way there. Such are direct hands-on ads pointing out accurately as desired by anyone, supplied with slogans and broad pointers of the real object to sell.
Listen to those who actually had real experience, but rely only on people of ample taste or know-how to evaluate the place that may apply to your lifestyle and demand.
Look at Reliable World Class Tourists Parks
The Wakulla Springs State Park in Florida, U.S.A. is a 3,000 acres sprawling line of pristine forest rich in wildlife and natural trails. The Wakulla River running thru aged-growth cypress swamps is real core rainforests water that makes it a generally accepted tourist destination for canoe adventurers all over the U.S. A real photographers’ environment, it is a delight to pick pictures of countless wildlife, like alligators, turtles, and different species of birds eating vegetation in their natural habitat.
Vancouver Islands in Canada offer a lot of opportunities to all types of canoe or kayak paddlers during the spring or winter. Choose on either, to fare the *Cowichan Lake and the *Cowichan River, a great opportune place for sports, recreation, or plain fare around the lakes.
There are a lot more places of acclaim where you could pass time for canoeing. Most importantly, just look for one that provides primary safety, convenience, and comfort rather than the ambience it upholds to those with high lifestyle.

Engaging in Some Outdoor Fun Like Canoeing in California

August 5th, 2008

Many people love to sstay in California because the weather is just right all throughout the year. It isn’t too hot since the Pacific Ocean is to the west and it’s never very cold because snow never falls.
Here are two places worth visiting for those who want to have some outdoor fun.
The first is Yosemite National Park. There are trails for those who want to go hiking and biking while those who want to relax can enjoy fishing or canoeing at the nearby lake. Given that many people frequent it every year, tourists are encouraged to make reservations ahead of time especially for those who are staying overnight.
Next is San Simeon Creek. If there is no vacancy in Yosemite, it isn’t a bad option as the same activities can also be done here and it is only a few miles walk to the ocean. People can even pitch a tent and camp in the wilderness.
In both places, visitors can rent a canoe or bring the one that was attached to the roof of their car. Proper handling of the boat must be done at all times so there won’t be any additional charges if there are any damages incurred.
Since most trips will make the group stay in the boat for a few hours, it would be a good idea to bring along some food and water. A hat, a pair of sunglasses and some sunscreen should be applied to prevent the skin from getting burned.
It may be awhile before anyone does this again so someone should bring along a camera to take some pictures.
In order to protect the valuables brought on board, they should be placed in waterproof containers or plastic bags. A large canvass can also be used to minimize water splashing into the canoe.
Life jackets are a must even if the water is calm because too much movement may cause the canoe to capsize and it will take a while before everyone is able to get back in the boat.
Most people would rather go to the beach or do something else in the outdoors instead of rowing a canoe. But for once, you should try it because this experience may be enjoyable making it possible to do it again in the future.

A Peek Into Various Forms Of Canoeing

August 5th, 2008

Back in the old days canoeing was invented to meet the basic needs of early people for transportation across rivers, streams, marshes and along other waterways. Back then canoeing was the primary and almost only means for long-distance traveling at one part of history all-throughout the entirety of the Amazon Basin, Polynesia and North America among other places where the exact history of canoeing is still undefined and unrecorded.
As a mode of transportation, canoes have almost been extinct and their place taken over by motorboats, airplanes, trains and roads. And with the increasing number of cars in the world there is almost little need for man powered canoes and kayaks, although they still remain as one of the most popular recreational sports and watercrafts in the world.
This much is true due to the existence of a the canoe-based and kayaking like sports that actually uses canoes and kayaks as the main tool for competition. Some of the most famous forms of kayaking and canoe based sports would be water races with man powered boats. There are many forms of water racing that is based on canoeing. Here are some of them:
1. Sprint. This is probably one of the oldest disciplines of canoeing, sprint is also known as canoe racing and as the name suggests it involves several individuals on canoes that have the same goal, and that is to finish the race the fastest.
It is relatively easy when it comes to the requirements and the needs of the sport but the real need lies on the skill and the hard work that is exerted when paddling the canoe.
2. Slalom. Many people consider this as one of the hardest competitions in canoeing because the slalom competition pits each competitor in a grueling descent to the riverbed. This usually happens in white water rapids.
After the opening bell, all of the competitors flush out of the gates and down the rapids of the white water course. They weave the boats through gates placed along the white water line. The fastest time down the course and through the most number of gates wins.
3. Marathon. This refers to a long distance race done mostly in flat water or in the open sea. Flat-water courses are usually on lakes and in marshes and are relatively easy because of the minimal obstacles that you have to tackle. Open sea courses are more demanding and more dangerous because anything could happen.
Though most marathon canoe races are done during the calmer dispositions of the sea, you can never know what really lies ahead. Open watercourses are also more grueling because of the changing tides. Canoe marathons can be considered the world’s toughest boat race.

Canoes: What Makes Them Different?

August 5th, 2008

Generally speaking, canoes are like other boats in that they employ paddles to move the boat forward and backward or to move it around. But the differences may be more pronounced to some kind of paddled boats while others are just because of a mere innovation.
Take kayaks for example. The main difference between a kayak and a canoe is that a kayak is a closed type. But essentially a kayak uses the same double-bladed paddle and employs more or less the same strokes used in canoeing.
However, since the kayak has an enclosed top it allows the boat to recover from a capsized position without taking in that much water. With the help of a little something called a spraydeck, the deck is sealed between the deck and the paddler preventing the water to enter the insides of the kayak.
When we talk of paddled boats, we can’t avoid discussing another very popular kind, the rowboat. The rowboat is very different from the canoe. A rowboat is pushed through the water by means of the boat’s oars. The oar rests in pivots and extends out from the boat. Unlike canoeing where the paddler sits in a way that he sees the direction he is going, a rowboat paddler sits with his back toward the direction of travel.
Another kind of paddled boat is the Adirondack guide boat. This is a kind of rowboat which shows similarities to the design and functionality of a canoe. The only difference is that the paddler sits closer to the hull and uses oars that are attached to the sides of the boat.
But of course you’re familiar with the Dragon boats. There are competitions held using this kind of boat. Basically a dragon boat is paddled in the same way as a large canoe. The rowers sit facing the direction of travel and use a single blade paddle. However, this is where the similarities end. The dragon boat is constructed differently from the canoe.
And finally, we have the so called sit-on-tops another paddled boat which are more similar to a kayak in terms of design and handling than a conventional canoe.
It is well known that canoes tend to be unstable on the water. However, the instability often results from using the boat the wrong way. Thus it is always important to know the basics of handling and propulsion of the canoe before attempting rowing one. Also, always make sure to wear protective gear like floatation devices to assist you during accidents.

Recreational Canoeing

July 28th, 2008

There are several ways to spend the summer especially in the woods. There are people who, instead of wasting their time complaining about the heat, move out temporarily from their homes and find things to make them a little more cooled down. One of those things that we could do is to go camping on the river and go canoeing or kayaking, what is the difference between a canoe and a kayak and is there any difference in skill when you want to use either of them.
CANOEING FOR LEISURE
Canoeing is paddling a canoe through the riverbed for sport, recreation, or as a form of transportation. It usually means to use a paddle to move a canoe with only human muscle strength on the other hand a kayak is made to move using a paddle with two blades on either ends of the stick where you sit with your legs out in the front, canoes are mostly open boats. There are also other versions of each boat, one ultimately trying to match what the other can offer, there are open kayaks and closed canoes.
Generally the term canoeing is used for general paddling done inside an open or closed boat where the paddler usually has a double bladed or singles blade paddles. But it can also refer to any kind of paddle sport. In North America canoeing is slightly different from Kayaking.
In modern times canoeing sports and paddling sports, it can be that both canoes and kayaks appear to be closed decked or open decked. In competition canoeing or kayaking it is very hard to distinguish the difference between a canoe and a kayak except for the usual competition specifications like the length, the weight, and other specifications demanded by the competition.
The most noticeable and most common difference is that kayaks used in competitions will generally be in the seating position (for the paddler), and canoes that are entered in competitions will generally have the kneeling position for its paddler. Like most of the traditional and early canoes used by the Native Americans, the canoes didn’t have seats of any kind, the paddlers just stayed in a kneeling position on the bottom of the boat.
The recreational canoes from the Canadian border employed the use of small seats inside the boats and the ones used in whitewater canoeing and canoe surfing have also added harnesses so that it will be able to hold the rider in extreme conditions and also to avoid any kind of injury.

Some Great Tips For Canoeing

July 26th, 2008

If you’re a beginner canoeist, you might find these tips useful.
First, a good canoeist knows his equipment well. They don’t go into the water without having the right knowledge and without taking the right precautions. A haphazard canoeist will endanger not only himself but his fellow paddlers as well. Now with this in mind, always remember that spring days, your airbags will appear to deflate after a few minutes of staying on the water. The reason behind this is that the water during this season is still cold.
So if you’re using inflatable canoes and floatation devices, make sure that you inflate them well during the start of the day and then inflate them again after spend 10 minutes on the water.
When it comes to hotter weather, the reverse will occur. When you put the inflated canoe into the water, the air inside it will expand due to the hotter temperature of the lake or river. To avoid bursting or over inflating your canoe or floatation device it is best that you let air out over the couse of the day.
If you’re handling a big canoe and you find the size inadequate, you might find yourself in a pickle since you most likely will have trouble reaching over the gunwale. In this situation the resulting strokes will be too far away from the boat. This forces the canoe to turn rather than having a forward-driving force. The technique we recommend involves shifting weights.
What you need to do is to bring your knees together and shift your weight to the paddle side during paddling. By shifting your body weight, the gunwale is lowered as you go for a stroke. If you’re a beginner, don’t be surprised or scared. This position is actually very stable and the chances of capsizing are very slim.
With this position you can reach over the gunwale and keep your paddle in the vertical position as well. You’ll find that performing a stroke that will propel the canoe forward is easier and more efficient when done this way.
Finally, paddling a canoe can be easy or hard depending on your grip on the paddles. More often than not, holding a paddle with a relaxed grip will have better results. Holding the paddle too tight might cause the blades to twists and turn on the water surface which affects the movement of the canoe.
A loose grip improves your feel for the paddle and more importantly reduces the tension in your arms and shoulders. This will improve the way you bring the paddle blades over the water surface and will improve the way you steer your canoe.
These are only a few tips for canoeists. There are more that will answer specific needs of paddlers. Be sure to listen to you instructors carefully and always practice. Canoeing is a skill that can be learned.

Types of Canoeing

July 12th, 2008

There are a lot of watersports that people can learn. This can be on the surface or under and one activity that requires a lot of upper body strength is canoeing.
Years ago, canoeing was done by the native Indians for traveling and fishing. As man has evolved, these things have become obsolete and are better known these days simply as recreational activities.
Canoes are generally powered using single or doubled padded paddles. You can either remain in a sitting or kneeling position whichever is more comfortable.
Those who decide to try this solo should paddle alternately from one side to the other to stay on a straight course. Of course, this will be much easier if there is someone in the back helping out.
There are different types of canoeing, which mainly depends on the condition of the water so you have to know one from the other.
First is called whitewater canoeing. This is considered to be the most challenging of them all because you or the group have to fight against the rough current that also happens to be the most practiced form.
The second is called sea kayaking. People who want to take it slow can try this out but be on the lookout for changes in the current that could also be a problem.
Those who want to go out to water resorts situated along rivers and lakes can enjoy padding a canoe and camp somewhere in the wilderness and come back the following day.
Competitions are organized and regulated by the International Canoe Federation. In fact, this is considered to be an Olympic sport aside from the Sprint and the Slalom that are held annually.
In countries particularly in Asia, dragon boat racing is quite popular and resembles that of a canoe. The difference is that someone beats a drum in the front with a crew of 12 or more working together racing to the finish line.
Whenever people decide to head out on the water, it is best to have a lifejacket. This device is the only thing that will keep the individual on the surface especially if the downed member doesn’t know how to swim.
This will also allow the others to easily find you and then bring you into the canoe. First timers are advised to take a few classes first on land to be able to learn the basics before going with others on the canoe.

Canoeing, You Of The Well Known Basics

July 8th, 2008

A typical canoe is a narrow boat that commonly has a pointed bow and stern. They are open boat types, although, they can also be covered. It is usually maneuvered and propelled by paddles.
Canoe paddling can be differentiated from boat rowing in that the former involves the paddlers facing in the direction of travel while the latter involves the rowers facing away from the direction of travel. Canoe paddles can either be single-bladed or double-bladed.
The thing about the word “canoe” is that it is often times used to refer to both a canoe and kayak. Actually, the International Canoe Federation uses the word “canoe” to that effect especially during sporting competitions. It was the Europeans who first adopted the term canoe from the Arawak word “canoa” in the Caribbean Sea. It was Christopher Columbus who first discovered its meaning. Later on, Garcilaso de la Vega used the word to refer to an open boat.
Regardless, if it is used to refer to a canoe or a kayak, this type of boat has seven typical parts, most of which are really common in all kinds of boats. A canoe has a bow, stern, hull, seat, thwart which refers to a horizontal crossbeam at the top of the hull, gunwale which refers to the top edge of the hull, and the deck which can be used to help stabilize the boat to prevent if from going under.
Canoes, nowadays, also have a yoke which is a molded part located at the center of the canoe which provides a comfortable shoulder rest when one carries a canoe for transport and the like. Some other optional devices include flotation bags which protects the canoe during white water rapids. There’s also a spraydeck which is just a cover put over the canoe to prevent water from entering the canoe.
The early canoes were, of course, made from hallowed-out tree trunks. Some were constructed using bark of trees and reinforcing and waterproofing them through applying resins.
Meanwhile, modern canoes can also be made of wood but these aren’t the hallowed-out kinds from years ago. Newer canoes use wood strips or wood-and-canvas materials. Stitching and gluing the materials together are used to reinforce the boats.
Other materials used today include composites of fiberglass, Kevlar and carbon fibers, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene or ABS synthetic composites, polyethylene, and even graphite With newer materials, the canoes can be very light yet are stronger, more durable and flexible than its older counterparts.

Canoeing, The Simple Life

July 7th, 2008

Canoeing is a fun activity for you, your family and your friends. There are many benefits from taking up the hobby. The canoe itself is relatively cheaper than other hobbies or sports. All you need is to master canoe strokes, which aren’t that hard to do. And more importantly, you don’t need to go far since there are many places within the country that are suitable for canoeing.
The great thing about the canoe is that you won’t need a trailer or a speed boat to enjoy the sport. All you need is a canoe, a paddle, a life jacket and a mode of transportation that will bring you to the nearest river or lake.
Once you get hooked, you’ll find yourself spending lots of your time going over books, reading magazines and catalogues about canoeing. You start to look at the canoes available in the local sports or hobby shop.
You begin to look online for the best places to go and the best packages available for a canoe adventure with you and your friends. Don’t be overexcited, though and definitely don’t go overboard. Calm down and start small.
Since you’re a beginner, you will need to buy a canoe. Experts recommend that for your first canoe you can either buy the tough plastic kind or if you have some cash to spare and if its available locally, the aluminum-model.
A canoe that is anywhere from 15 to 17 feet long would be fine. Even though all canoes are essentially made of the same parts, there are some things that you might want to remember when buying a canoe.
As a beginner, you should avoid getting the models that have a deep keel. The keel refers to the ridge running down the length of the boat’s hull. This generally helps keep the boat going straight. The Grumman aluminum and Coleman plastic canoes have small keels and they are more often than not available in most sports and hobby stores. Also, choose a hull that is smooth to allow easy turning. You will learn to master the paddling skills as you keep practicing.
Don’t forget to buy a good pair of canoe paddles. Don’t hassle yourself with the different types of paddles. All you need for now is the standard type which can be used on either a lake or white water. Makes sure that you measure the paddle in proportion to your size. In a standing position, put the paddle beside you. If you find the grip of the paddle reaches somewhere between your chin and your nose, get that one.
Life jackets are very important as well. Never go canoeing without one. Safety first.
