What to Expect From a Rollerblading Magazine
July 22nd, 2008
A rollerblading magazine would be the best printed material or reference for the typical rollerblader. However, for other people and readers, the specialized magazine doesn’t matter much.
The specific and exclusive content for rollerbladers of rollerblading magazines make such print materials less attractive for diverse magazine readers. That is why there are only a handful of magazine publishers who are venturing into such special print materials.
On the local or even global magazine scene, seldom will you find rollerblading magazines. If there are such, they are limited in number, with circulations that are too small. Such magazines are also not printed on a regular basis.
Surely, magazine printing is a serious business. There must be profits. And that is where rollerblading magazines fail. Since such magazines are very much specialized, the readers aren’t so diverse and so print advertisers are less interested in investing for ads.
Rollerblading magazines offer rollerbladers much information about their interests and recreation. Thus, rollerblading magazines are expected to highlight the current trend in the activity, the superstars or those who are recognized by reputable organizations for their skillful rollerblading exhibition, and of course helpful tips and new tricks for rollerbladers.
What to expect in rollerblading magazines? Nothing much except for numerous information and tips for the modern rollerblader. Since publishers of such magazines assume that their readers are confined to rollerbladers, there are lingo and jargons that are too exclusive for rollerblading.
That shuns out non-rollerbladers from enjoying such magazines. The pictures are great and are attention-grabbing, but the captions can be too technical or too hippie to be appreciated by the other readers.
Magazine forums and fan mails are also too egoistic and too limited within the realms of rollerblading. Rollerblading magazines are just like community posts. Non-members of the community would truly be alienated.
Thus, for such magazines to thrive, they must diversify. Not only will they be attracting other readers if they do so, ultimately, their profitability would be bolstered because print ads would surely start coming.
Readers are so diverse. They always want to learn new things and look at other activities not familiar to them. That is the basic instinct of every reader.
Thus, if rollerblading magazines would open doors to let them take a peek into rollerblading, a ‘win-win’ situation could be created and rollerbladers and other readers can be happier alike.
How to Keep Safe When Rollerblading at Rinks
July 14th, 2008
There are especially constructed rinks for rollerblading. A rink is a pavement constructed to specifically become a venue for this activity.
There are communities that are recognizing the rising popularity of rollerblading among youngsters. So, some community officials resorted to building rinks within the community instead of allowing rollerbladers to roam around the streets.
Safety concerns are among the top priorities one should always bear in mind when rollerblading. Rollerblading can be very fun, but still, that isn’t enough of reason for rollerbladers to be negligent about overall safety.
Even if rollerblading is done at the designated rinks, safety should still be prioritized. In a community, there can be numerous youngsters who are devoted to rollerblading. Imagine, if all of you are doing the activity in a single rink all at once, the place can be crowded and you may bump into one another.
Remember that rollerblading involves the manipulation and control of speed. If rollerbladers bump into each other while speeding on their rollerblades, imagine what disaster the accident could bring about.
Alas, rollerblading rinks are also not too spacious to accommodate numerous rollerbladers at once. Though, it is sure the most advisable and safest venue to rollerblade, safety measures should still be instituted to ensure that all people involved doesn’t get hurt.
Here are some safety instructions on how you can maintain overall safety, for yourself and for other rollerbladers, when doing the fun activity in an outdoor, or an indoor rink.
o Wear the necessary protective gear when rollerblading. There are numerous sports shops that are currently selling specified rollerblading safety gear, which include helmets and wrist, elbow and knee guards. Wear the gear appropriately and as instructed in labels and by experts.
o If you are just learning how to rollerblade, then the rink isn’t the appropriate venue for you, especially if there are other rollerbladers in there. Crash lessons for rollerblading are usually conducted at enclosed areas with a gym mat or rubberized floor. Soft lawns can also be an ideal ‘rink’ for beginners.
o When rollerblading, always observe proper stance and form. You know how to do the activity correctly so stick to it. It is normal that you would strive to impress bystanders. There’s nothing wrong with it, but make sure you can handle the situation and not compromise your safety and that of others.
Most of all, when rollerblading at a rink, make sure you give other rollerbladers the opportunity and time to enjoy the venue. There’s nothing better than having a ‘give-and-take’ relationship within the premises of the rink.
What Determines Rollerblading Style
July 7th, 2008
Each rollerblader tends to have his style of rollerblading. When you watch rollerblading movies, notice how quick and suave they are with a pair of skates on their feet. Realistically speaking, rollerblading style is determined by the wheels.
The size and the hardness of the wheels has the biggest impact on rollerblading. So if you want to be as good as the actors, rather stunt doubles, in the rollerblading movies you’ve seen, your choice on the wheels must depend on the following priorities: the core and the profile are quite important.
First, the hardness of the rollerblading wheel has this general rule: the harder it is, then the longer it will last. But you also need to be concerned with the grip. The lower the grip, then the less it can absorb the vibration and shock of the wheel when on the trail.
For recreational rollerbladers, wheels that are falling within the range of 78A up to 82A is appropriate for them. This hardness of the wheels allows them to control these well and to roll smoothly on trails.
Wheels must always be checked on a monthly basis. Are they worn out? If yes, then they must be replaced. If you’ve seen that there are wheels more worn out than the others, then the harder wheels must be placed in these positions.
A rollerblader’s style depends on the hardness of his wheels. Those who are aggressive tend to put the hard wheels in the two front positions. This lets them stride better.
Size of the wheel is also a factor a rollerblader must consider. Generally, inline wheels measure 72 mm up to 78 mm in length. These are the appropriate sizes for the fitness and recreational skaters. These are also suitable for female skaters.
As for male skaters, it is suggested that they go for the 78 mm wheels. This is because they are heavier and the longer wheels allow them to move faster.
There are recreational rollerbladers who intend to look at the sport as a work out, therefore they manage to skate on trails that have longer distances and also allow them to go faster and do more sprints. The wheels on their skates must therefore be of larger sizes. Larger wheels let them go at a faster pace.
Hopefully, the guidelines mentioned above will come in handy for rollerbladers who are getting into the sport and to those who are about to change their wheels.
Rollerblading: Why It can be Fun for Kids, Too
June 30th, 2008
Kids will always be kids. They are adventurous, ever curious and forever on the lookout for amusement. Most of them don’t want a couch potato’s life. So if you are a young mom that is looking for a channel for your kid’s energy, then it’s high time to enroll him in his first rollerblading lesson!
Rollerblading might appear to be a risky sport to most parents. Although some moves may prove to be on the edge, still, there are many ways of enjoying this sport while not jeopardizing your child’s safety. There are many safety rules and equipment that would guarantee that your child is out of danger. There may be falls, yes, but accidents can be avoided.
Rollerblading not only teaches about exercise, muscle coordination and mastering technical moves. It also teaches your child some discipline and socialization. With the rigidity of constant practice, your child will learn about time management and delegation of activities. And these will all help your child in his growth and psychological development.
There are many rollerblading training camps that offer classes when schools are out. Most instructors are available during holidays and even weekends. Of course, kids are taught differently when compared to adult students. There is a separate group of instructors who specialize in teaching children the rollerblading sport.
Lessons for kids normally include how to fall properly (to lessen the occurrence of injuries caused by bad falls), getting better balance, confidence while on the skates, turning and stopping with accuracy and even some tricks and moves that would mirror the moves of professional skaters.
There are many websites that offer rollerblade training for kids. You might want to check on the following: Rollerblading.com (look for the kids’ link)—this is inclusive of Kids’ Universe, ActiveKidz, FoxKids.com, Activities for Kids and Weird Stop; and LondonSkaters.com (again, look for articles on kids).
And guess what, for birthday parties, you can now choose to have the rollerblading theme for your little rollerblade enthusiast. This party theme is highly recommended for kids aged 8-12 years old.
To sum it all up, don’t focus too much on the injuries that your kid might incur. Instead, think of all the positive aspects that he will gain once he masters rollerblading. Learn to let go of him and he will be able to reach heights that you could never imagine (whether it be figurative or literal).
How to Carve during Spinouts in Roller Blading
June 26th, 2008
There are times when you have to carve your way to the left or right for a better performance, and there are times when you simply have to allow yourself to glide. Knowing the difference between both instances is definitely one way of making you better at roller blading.
How to Carve during a Toe-Drag Spinout
Although this trick sounds intimidating, it’s actually fairly easy to accomplish as long as you dedicate sufficient time and effort to practicing this technique. A toe-drag spinout can be achieved by allowing one foot to spinout while letting the other accomplish a toe-drag.
For a right sided toe-drag spinout, all you have to do is carve your way to the right. Don’t feel surprised or disappointed if you have a hard time balancing yourself and having sufficient strength to perform the trick till the end.
Obviously enough, it’s your toe that will be subject to the greatest amount of pain and stress with this trick; keep in mind, however, that the pain and pressure you feel on your toe is directly proportional to the type of carved turn you’ll make. The more pain you feel, the sharper your carved turn. Consequently, you’ll find it easier or quicker to stop.
The amount of space you take up depends on the speed at which you’re moving. On average, you’ll only require a small amount of space to carve a toe-drag spinout but at terrifying speed, you’ll definitely need more space.
Choose your setting carefully. Besides choosing a path that has adequate space for you to perform this trick effectively, make sure that it has an even surface as well.
How to Carve during a Heel-Drag Spinout
If you find the toe-drag spinout easy, you’ll definitely find this trick a breeze.
To perform this trick, start by using the rear wheels of your roller blades and planting them firmly on the ground. From this position, allow your body to revolve. As you do so, you’ll find the rear wheels inclined to roll away but of course, allowing it to do so will destroy your performance. Thus, you need to exert sufficient pressure on the wheels to keep it from moving.
Now, that’s the easy part. If you’re going to do it in reverse, that’s when carving comes in. Repeat everything but this time, make sure that you carve one foot first at the back and inwards before you start to spin.
